Friday July 16th - Calgary ’99

Friday we went to the Calgary Zoo. It was a half decent day, the first since we'd been there. It didn't rain, but it didn't sun either...

The zoo was pretty cool, it was set up like a big park, with trails leading to the different environments. There was a great wolf area, and we were lucky enough to see the wolves playing Bite-The-Head, which is a game that even Regular Dogs play (at least ours do!).

There were a couple of big ole grizzly bears making faces, and a little furry dude standing up that turned out to be an actual Prairie Dog (which isn't Dog-Like at all).

There was a fun exhibit with the Gorillas, which had a sort of jungle jim for the gorillas and then a matching one outside the area for the human monkeys...

Also, a fun area with plastic life-sized dinosaurs! Can't imagine what prompted them putting this up in a zoo... but it was very surreal. Some of them looked pretty real, from far away at least, but then you'd see a little ducklette paddling under the arced neck of a brontosaur, and the reality just came crashing in...

After that, did a little shopping and other boring Touristy-Type stuff, and collapsed.

But for just a short while, since at 2 a.m., there was a fire drill! This loud f-ing bell went off - we tried to ignore it, really we did, but it wouldn't stop, so I called the front desk to ask them to Kindly Make It Stop, but they couldn't, it Being a Fire Drill and All. So we all traipsed up to the Lobby, and waited for about an hour while firemen checked every room and discovered - no fire. So we got to go back to our rooms. Leslie, having gone out a side door, spent the whole time outside! Brrr...
